Dogs can be used to find dangerous chemicals, including bombs. Labrador retrievers and German shepherds are often used for this sort of work because og their extraordinary sense of smell. In the USA dogs are trained to sniff out more than 19,000 different combinations of exploding chemicals that can be used to make bombs. They can also detect drugs that are being smuggled in planes, cars, lorries and boats.

Dogs were used to carry messages during World War! Many human messengers were killed so dogs were trained to do this task instead. Stray dogs were trained and sent to the front. Messages or food were put in tin cylinders and the dogs carried them between soldiers. The dogs probably saved many live, but 7500 of them were killed in action.
